TRIP OVERVIEW

To the north of Kathmandu valley, there lies a Shivapuri National Park which is home to thousands of species of floras and faunas. The national park covers an area of 159 km square to Nuwakot and Sindhupalchowk. Shivapuri is an important water source for the Kathmandu valley and has been considered a protected area since 1972 but officially became a National Park in 2002. The National park covers such a long area that many different destinations can be explored and visited. Shivapuri is not only famous for the national park but also famous for a short one-day hike.

Shivapuri National Park is one of Nepal's most well-known national parks, particularly among young people who come for day hikes, camping, and other activities. There are numerous locations to explore in the national park. Budhanilkantha, one of the Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park's entrances, serves as the beginning point for this climb. A Hindu pilgrimage site in Budhanilkantha displays a reclining figure of Lord Vishnu floating in a coil of snakes. From Ratna Park Bus Stop, take a bus to Budhanilkantha.

The National Park entry is about a 2.3-kilometer uphill hike in a north-easterly direction from Budhanilkantha, where the bus leaves you off. On the way, you can stop for some light snacks and a cup of tea at one of the local tea shops. Permits to access the national park region can be purchased for around Rs 500 ($5) for foreigners and Rs 50 ($0.05) for Nepalese at the army checkpoint.

Shivapuri Hiking offers breathtaking views of the Langtang Himalayas, beautiful scenery, and a bird's-eye view of Kathmandu Valley and its environs. Spending a day hiking around Kathmandu valley is a natural delight. It's a never-ending ascent to the summit of Shivapuri Hill. During the hike to Shivapuri, you may observe Bagdwar, the origin of the Bagmati River.
